Truck Bed and Truck Requirements

The Lance 855S is specifically classified by Lance as a short-bed camper for 350/3500-series and larger trucks.

Recommended truck:

  • Ford F-350 Super Duty SRW or equivalent
  • Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD SRW or equivalent
  • GMC Sierra 3500HD SRW or equivalent
  • Ram 3500 SRW or equivalent
  • A properly equipped higher-capacity truck may also be used, subject to payload and axle ratings.

Bed configuration:

  • Short-bed pickup
  • Minimum bed length: approximately 6'0"
  • The 855S is not intended for a standard long-bed-only configuration; Lance categorizes it specifically as a short-bed model.
Important Payload Requirement

Because the 855S has a published dry weight of approximately 2,857 lbs., the truck must have sufficient available payload capacity for the camper plus passengers, water, propane, batteries, options, camping equipment, and other cargo. The published wet weight is approximately 3,191 lbs., before additional personal cargo and passengers.

For that reason, a 350/3500 one-ton truck with adequate payload capacity is the appropriate starting point. The actual truck/camper combination should be verified using the truck's door-jamb payload sticker, GVWR, rear-axle rating, and Lance's compatibility requirements before purchase. Lance specifically notes that truck options, 4WD, cab configuration, camper options, passengers, cargo, and towing can affect compatibility.
